The primary responsibility of a company secretary is to provide support and assistance to the Director(s). It is no longer mandatory for a private limited company to have a company secretary. In the case where there is only one individual in the company, it is acceptable for that person to hold the positions of Director, Shareholder, and Person of Significant Control (PSC) only.
The requirement for a company secretary only applies to Public Limited Companies (PLCs), where it is mandatory to have a qualified company secretary appointed at all times.
